“I love french because you get to learn a new language and find out lots of new things about a different country.”

Nurture

We want to nurture in children a love of language and an appreciation of other cultures. At St. Leos and Southmead, the children learn French from Year 3 until Year 6. Topics include ‘Going to school’, ‘Heallthy Eating’, ‘Sports’ and lots of other everyday activities. The children’s learning involves a mix of online and classroom learning through ‘Language Nut’. They are provided with opportunities to read, write and practise speaking and listening skills. They learn about customs that are part of the French culture and different aspects of French life. French provides children with an opportunity to learn about another culture that is different from their own.

Inspire

Our aim is to inspire children to develop a lifelong curiosity about languages and consequently the world that they live in. We hope to inspire some of our children to become future linguists and travel to different places. In order to be successful global citizens of the future, children need to develop an understanding of the world by learning about other countries. This allows them not only to develop their language skills while they are in primary school but also prepare them and instil in them a desire to learn for when they move to secondary school and beyond.

Succeed

Learning a language also develops other cognitive skills, such as problem solving, memory function and thinking creatively – all skills that will benefit children throughout their lives. We want children to achieve and succeed in all areas of the curriculum. French is part of a broad and balanced curriculum and allows children’s confidence and learning to grow. We use certificates to celebrate children’s achievements in French and assess progress on Target Tracker. We want every child to achieve to their full potential in this subject of the curriculum.

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
